Part 8: A Small Celebration

THE TRIP BACK TO PIRATES Cove was smooth and uneventful. The waters were so calm that the ocean almost appeared like a sheet of glass. As night fell a full moon rose into a cloudless sky. The silvery moon shone brilliantly, along with a field of tiny diamond stars. With the ocean so still it was almost impossible to see where the horizon was, and the reflection of the night sky on the sea gave me the impression I was flying through space rather sailing! The sight was so entrancing that I found myself lost within myself as I thought about the day's events.

It was close to midnight, or perhaps later when we spotted the first twinkling lights of Pirates Cove. To my surprise, as we drew closer I could hear the sounds of life echoing across the waters.

“That's Pirates Cove for you,” Lizzie said, with a wink. She had joined me on the poop deck as we approached the shore. “The people that frequent this town are a rowdy bunch, so it's loud pretty much all night!”

“I see. So a few glasses of ale won't be out of the ordinary this time of night then!”

“Most certainly not!” Lizzie laughed.

A few minutes later we slid into port. The crew lashed the ship firmly to the dock while Lizzie made sure the cabin, as well as the hatches on deck, were all secured. With these tasks completed the four of us set out for The Twisted Tuna.

The tavern was the main source of life on the small island and it didn't seem to matter much to its patrons what time of night it was! Lively music was being played by a small band and several drunken sailors were attempting to dance to the tunes. Nearly every table was packed with men and women, merrily swapping tales and jokes. Henry and Daniel pushed their way to a table in the corner for us while I joined Lizzie in her quest to retrieve some large glasses of ale from the bartender. I looked around for Black Bart but did not see him anywhere. In my haste to join the crew of The Salty Wench, I had left my personal items with him and I wanted to get them back now. But I figured it could wait until the morning.

Lizzie and I joined our other two companions and the table. Lizzie held her foamy mug of ale in the air for a toast.

“To The Salty Wench, and her newest captain, Ragnar! May he live longer than our last captain!”

We all laughed and clinked our mugs together, spilling ale onto the table, then drank them down quickly.

“Wow! That's strong!” I exclaimed.

“You haven't spent enough time in taverns, I think,” said Daniel with a chuckle.

“Oh,” Lizzie suddenly spoke up. “Before we all get too sloshed and I forget, here's everyone's cut from this last trip!”

She produced four small bags and distributed them among us. I picked mine up and felt the pleasant feeling of coins inside.
